“3 years ago, my life was a black and white movie”
“3 years ago, Arti and I met online- we both couldn’t see and that’s exactly what we connected on. But as we chatted more, we spoke about our desire for companionship. Just being able to talk about our struggles together helped us open up.
Within a month, phone calls became our thing. I found Arti’s voice very comforting; we’d talk in the evening for hours- I’d make her laugh and she’d sing to me!
Being blind, I was underconfident; I’d constantly think, ‘Why would anyone desire me?’ I felt I’d only be rejected! But Arti made me feel capable, ‘You’re in college and doing as well as those who can see. One day, you’ll make your mark!’ I felt encouraged. She’d even say, ‘I can’t see but I’m capable of doing everything else. What’s there to crib about?’ Within no time, she became my inspiration. And honestly, it was so easy to fall in love with her.
It was pretty clear we were both smitten, it was only a matter of time before one of us was going to ask the other out.
And when that happened, I felt like the happiest man. While on call, Arti confessed, ‘Deepak, I love you!’ I didn’t respond for about 30 seconds; I just soaked the feeling in! And after, I told her I always felt the same way about her too. That’s when we planned to meet in person for the first time!
I traveled to Delhi for her. I even put on a tux and brought her flowers; she was giggling. And when we held hands for the first time, the feeling was electric! We walked hand in hand and enjoyed the street food. Later, we sat in a park and spoke about everything until sunset.
It was perfect and we didn’t want the date to end! She dropped me off at the station and we planned to meet again! Ever since, our dates have always been this simple- strolls accompanied by ice creams. We also receive compliments from strangers who say, 'You two look perfect together.’ and 'We hope you guys get married soon!’ That often makes me wonder, ‘What if Arti and I could see? What if we judged each other on our looks and never approached each other? What a shame that would have been!’ And so that’s why I always tell Arti, ‘I can’t see you, but you have the most beautiful soul!’ And whenever I say this, I can sense her smiling; that’s what I live for.
We haven’t told our parents about us yet. We’re from different castes and it will take time to convince them, but I’m sure once they see the love we share, they will agree!
Arti and I have been dating for 3 years now; she’s made me a pro at using technology and her motivation helped me graduate college; I now work in a school. And by the time Arti finishes college and starts working, I would have saved enough to buy her a ring so I can ask her to marry me. Don’t tell her I’m planning this though, it’s going to be a surprise.
3 years ago, my life was a black and white movie, but now there is color and light. And I know it stems from only one person… Arti - my sunshine!”
